WAT PRASAT (4)

Wat Prasat, or the Monastery of the Castle, is located off the city island in the northern area of Ayutthaya, in the Khlong Sra Bua Sub-district.

The monastery was situated between Wat Phraya Maen and Wat Jong Krom in an area earlier called Thung Khwan (1).

Wat Prasat stood northwest and adjacent to Wat Jong Krom.

The site, which is roughly 140 meters long on 100 meters wide, was excavated in 2016 CE by the Fine Arts Department. Different monastic structures were unearthed in situ.

Its historical background and period of construction are unknown.

The site features only in Fine Arts Department (FAD) maps.

The ruins of Wat Prasat are in geographical coordinates: 14° 22' 32.72" N, 100° 33' 15.58" E.

At least four other temples in and around Ayutthaya bear the same name.

Footnotes:

(1) Thung Khwan, or "Field of Fumes", is an area north of the city of Ayutthaya bordered on the north by Thung Lum Phli, on the east by Khlong Sra Bua and Thung Kaeo, in the south by the old Lopburi River and in the west by Thung Phukhao Thong. This area was likely related to crematory services.
