WAT MONTHOP (3)

Wat Monthop, or the Monastery of the Spired Building, was once located northwest of the main island, strategically within the defensive Khlong Maha Nak system (1), just south of Wat Lan Pho (shrine mound) and north of Wat Sala Pun in the Phukhao Thong Sub-district.

No traces are remaining of the former monastery, with the exception of a small brick mound.

Locals built on the spot a commemoration pavilion. In the small pavilion sits a Buddha in the bhumisparsa hand gesture, also called the "Victory over Mara" mudra. The image comes from the opposite temple, Wat Phanom Yong. Some pieces of Buddha images discovered on the spot were deposited in the pavilion.

There is very little known about the history of this monastery.

Wat Monthop does not appear on Phraya Boran Rachathanin’s map of 1926 CE and is first shown on a Fine Arts Department map of 1993 CE.

The site is in geographical coordinates: 14° 21' 47.97" N, 100° 32' 58.01" E.

There are two other monasteries with identical names in the City District: Wat Monthop on Ko Loi in the Hua Ro Sub-district and Wat Monthop (defunct) in the Suan Phlu District.
