Wat Phra Non, or the Monastery of the Reclining Buddha, was located off the city island in the southern area of Ayutthaya in the Samphao Lom Sub-district (1).
In situ is a brick mound. There were no traces of any brickwork. On the mound sat in 2009 CE a small mushroom farm.
Its historical background and period of construction are unknown.
The monastery is only mentioned on a Fine Arts Department map drafted in 1993 CE. Based on this map, Wat Phra Non is situated south of Wat Wihan Khian and west of Wat Thong. The latter site seems not to be correctly indicated on this map, so Wat Phra Non could not be correctly identified.
The brick mound is in geographical coordinates: 14° 20' 27.22" N, 100° 33' 55.15" E.
In the Khlong Suan Phlu Sub-district (eastern area), there is another temple with the same name.
Footnotes:
(1) Sub-district called after the village Ban Samphao Lom near the Chao Phraya River. The village is on the Monthon Krung Kao map (1916 CE). John Bowring (1857, London, John W. Parker and Son, West Strand), in his book ‘The Kingdom and People of Siam’, wrote: "Between the modern and the ancient capital, Bangkok and Ayuthia, is a village called the “Sunken Ship,” the houses being erected round a mast which towers above the surface at low water."
